Selling your car? How to close or move your FASTag

The FASTag is linked to your bank account and your name, not just the car. If you sell the car without closing it, tolls the new owner runs up can still come out of your wallet.

Quick answer

A FASTag can't be transferred to the car's new owner. The seller closes the FASTag account with the bank that issued it and gets the unused balance (and usually the security deposit) refunded. The buyer removes the old sticker and buys a new FASTag in their own name. Only one tag can be active on a vehicle, so the buyer's new tag replaces yours.

If you're selling the car

  1. Recharge or settle any negative balance Banks won't close an account with dues. SBI, for example, asks you to settle a negative balance first.
  2. Ask your bank to close the FASTag account Use the bank's FASTag portal or helpline. At Axis Bank, email [email protected] from your registered email with a cancelled cheque.
  3. Remove and destroy the sticker Axis Bank asks you to remove (destroy) the tag when you sell the vehicle, so it can't be used again.
  4. Get the refund The unused balance goes back to your bank account. Axis says within 10 working days. The security deposit is refunded at closure, subject to the bank's conditions.

If you're buying a used car

  1. Check what's on the car Run a FASTag status check with the vehicle number to see any tags still linked to it.
  2. Ask the seller to close their tag If they haven't, the old tag stays linked to their account until your new one replaces it.
  3. Remove the old sticker Peel it off and destroy it.
  4. Buy a new FASTag in your name Get one from any bank, or buy a FASTag here, and stick it correctly. See where to stick your FASTag.

Under the One Vehicle One FASTag rule, your new tag becomes the only active tag on that vehicle number, and older tags on it are closed.

OneTag isn't a transfer to a new owner

OneTag, live in the Rajmargyatra app since 17 September 2026, lets the same owner move their FASTag to a different bank and keep the tag. It doesn't change the owner. When a car changes hands, the seller still closes the tag and the buyer still gets a new one.

If you had an Annual Pass

The FASTag Annual Pass is non-transferable: it's valid only for the vehicle the tag is fixed on and registered to. NHAI hasn't published what happens to unused pass trips when a tag is closed, so ask your bank before you close it. See FASTag Annual Pass.

Questions drivers ask

Can I transfer my FASTag to a new owner when I sell my car?

No. The seller closes the FASTag account with their bank, and the buyer buys a new FASTag in their own name.

How do I close my FASTag account?

Contact the bank that issued it through its FASTag portal or helpline, settle any negative balance, and request closure. The unused balance is refunded to your bank account.

Will I get my FASTag security deposit back?

Usually yes, at closure, but conditions apply. For example, HDFC and Kotak refund it only to full-KYC customers, and HDFC doesn't refund it if your balance is negative.

I bought a used car with a FASTag already on it. Can I use it?

No. The tag belongs to the seller's account. Remove it and buy a new FASTag in your name; your new tag becomes the only active one on the vehicle.
