FASTag KYV: do you still need it, and how to finish it

KYV used to switch off thousands of car FASTags. The rules have eased twice since then. Here's what applies to your vehicle today.

Quick answer

For cars, jeeps and vans, KYV is no longer a routine requirement. New car tags issued from 1 February 2026 don't need it, and existing car tags need it only if there's a complaint, such as a loose tag or misuse. If your bank does ask, you usually upload one front photo showing the number plate and the FASTag; RC details are fetched from VAHAN. Commercial vehicles still go through KYV.

What KYV is

KYV (Know Your Vehicle) checks that a FASTag is on the vehicle it was issued for. It came from NPCI's June 2024 guidelines, which asked banks to verify vehicle details against VAHAN and collect vehicle photos, and to blacklist tags that weren't verified.

WhenWhat changed
Aug 2024KYV rules start: front and side photos, tags linked to a mobile number
30 Oct 2025Simplified: car side photo dropped, only a front photo with number plate and FASTag; RC fetched from VAHAN; tags not cut off without warning
1 Feb 2026Dropped for new car/jeep/van tags; existing car tags need KYV only after a complaint; tags activate only after VAHAN validation

Who still needs KYV

  • Commercial vehicles (trucks, buses, LCVs): no 2026 change was announced for them, so KYV still applies.
  • Cars with a complaint against the tag, for example a tag reported as loose, issued on the wrong vehicle or misused.
  • Cars where VAHAN has no data for the vehicle: the bank then validates using your RC instead.

How to complete KYV when your bank asks

  1. Open your issuer's FASTag portal or app Use the portal of the bank that issued your tag. For tags issued directly by NHAI, the IHMCL FAQ points to fastag.ihmcl.com.
  2. Take one clear front photo Stand in front of the vehicle so the number plate and the FASTag on the windshield are both visible. Since October 2025 a side photo isn't needed for cars.
  3. Let it fetch your RC RC details are pulled from VAHAN using your vehicle, chassis or mobile number. Upload the RC only if the portal asks for it.
  4. Keep the reference number If the tag stays inactive after a few days, call your bank with it, then the national highway helpline 1033.

If your tag was deactivated for KYV

Since the October 2025 change, banks are expected to send SMS reminders and help you before disconnecting a tag, and FASTag service isn't supposed to stop without giving you a chance to complete KYV. No fixed number of days has been published. If your tag shows as blacklisted, complete KYV through the steps above, then check the status again after it's approved. See what each FASTag status means.

Questions drivers ask

Is FASTag KYV mandatory in 2026?

Not for most cars. New car, jeep and van tags issued from 1 February 2026 don't need it, and existing car tags need it only after a complaint. Commercial vehicles still need it.

What photos are needed for FASTag KYV?

For cars, one front photo showing the number plate and the FASTag on the windshield. The side photo was dropped in October 2025.

Do I need to upload my RC for KYV?

Usually not. RC details are fetched automatically from VAHAN. The bank asks for the RC only when VAHAN has no data for the vehicle.

My FASTag was blacklisted for KYV. How long until it works again?

It's reactivated once your bank approves the KYV. No fixed timeline is published; if it's still inactive after a few days, call your bank and then the 1033 helpline.
