Wrong or double toll deduction: how to get your money back

Wrong deductions are fixed through your bank, not at the plaza. What matters most is reporting it within your bank's window, with the SMS as proof.

Quick answer

Report the wrong deduction to the bank that issued your FASTag (app, website or toll-free number) as soon as you see the SMS. Banks set their own windows, as short as 15 days at some banks, so don't wait. The bank raises a chargeback on the toll plaza's bank; IHMCL says this normally takes 20 to 30 working days. If your bank doesn't respond, call the national highway helpline 1033, then email [email protected].

How to raise the dispute

  1. Find the SMS for the deduction Every FASTag debit sends an SMS with the plaza, date, time and amount. That's your main evidence.
  2. Report it to your issuing bank Use the bank's FASTag app, website or toll-free number. Mention the transaction ID or SMS details, and what was wrong.
  3. Attach proof if asked Plaza receipt or zero-transaction receipt, the cash or UPI receipt if you paid twice, your RC, and a front photo of the vehicle showing the tag.
  4. Note the complaint number You'll need it to follow up or escalate.
  5. Escalate if there's no answer Call 1033, the national highway helpline. If your bank still doesn't respond, email [email protected] with the complaint number.

Spotting it early

  • Keep FASTag SMS alerts on, and check them the same day after a long trip.
  • Note plazas where you paid in cash or UPI, and keep those receipts.
  • Make sure only one FASTag is active on your vehicle; old tags can cause confusing deductions. See FASTag status meanings.
  • Track an open complaint with our dispute tracker.

Questions drivers ask

How do I get a refund for a double FASTag deduction?

Report it to the bank that issued your FASTag with the SMS details. The bank raises a chargeback on the plaza's bank and reverses the duplicate once it's proven, normally within 20 to 30 working days.

How many days do I have to report a wrong FASTag deduction?

It depends on your bank: HDFC says 15 days, ICICI 30 days, Kotak 35 days, and IHMCL's general guidance is 40 days. Report it as soon as you see the SMS.

Who do I complain to if my bank doesn't refund a FASTag deduction?

Call the national highway helpline 1033, then email [email protected] with your bank complaint number.

Can the toll plaza refund a wrong FASTag deduction?

No. FASTag refunds go through the bank that issued your tag, which recovers the money from the plaza's bank.
