FASTag vehicle classes (VC4, VC5, VC7…) and what to do if you're overcharged

The class printed on your FASTag decides which toll rate you pay. A wrong class means the wrong toll, and it can get the tag blacklisted.

Quick answer

The class on your FASTag tells the toll system what kind of vehicle you drive. VC4 is for cars, jeeps and vans (and Tata Ace-type mini trucks); VC5 for light commercial vehicles and mini-buses; VC7 for 2-axle buses and trucks; VC6 for 3-axle commercial vehicles; VC12 for 4–6 axle trucks; VC15 for 7+ axle trucks; VC16 for earth-moving and construction machinery. If your tag shows the wrong class, ask your bank for a replacement tag of the right class.

The tag classes

From IHMCL's FASTag issuance vehicle classification document (July 2025). FASTags aren't issued for two-wheelers, three-wheelers or tractors, and two-wheelers pay no toll on national highways.

How the class sets your toll

Toll rates on national highways are set per kilometre for six fee categories, and every plaza publishes its rates by category. The tag class maps your vehicle to one of them. The base rates fixed in 2007-08, which are revised every year, show how much the category matters:

Fee categoryBase rate (2007-08), ₹/km
Car / jeep / van / LMV0.65
LCV / LGV / mini-bus1.05
Bus / truck (2 axles)2.20
3-axle commercial2.40
Heavy construction / multi-axle (4–6 axles)3.45
Oversized (7+ axles)4.20

Base rates from NH fee notifications; actual toll is revised yearly and differs by plaza. Check a plaza's rates on its toll plaza page.

If your tag has the wrong class

A car tag (VC4) on a truck underpays; a truck tag on a car overpays. The plaza system flags a mismatch between the vehicle and the tag's class, and NHAI's FAQ says such a tag is liable to be blacklisted. Since 2024, new tags are issued only after checking the vehicle against VAHAN, to stop class mismatches.

  1. Check the class on your tag It's printed on the FASTag and shown in your bank's app.
  2. Ask for a replacement of the correct class Banks treat this as a replacement. At Axis Bank it's the "mismatched" replacement, ₹100. See replace or reissue a FASTag.
  3. Dispute any overcharge If you were charged a higher class's toll, raise a dispute with your bank for the difference. See wrong or double deduction.
